One lesson I've learned the hard way tinkering with Linux: You can
never have too many back ups.
Depending on how much effort it takes to redo the SD card from
scratch, you might want to consider creating a backup image of the SD
card that already has speech installed in the console and which you've
made the tweaks you like to both as a ways of making repairing a
borked main card quicker and as a base for testing stuff that might
bork the card.
Fortunately, if you're already using dd to burn the official Raspbian
image, creating your own custom image is easy: just set the SD card as
input instead of output and set the output to something like
"Jessica's Raspbian Backup.img".
