To sync files have a look at syncthing. Google it.
Not updating a loaded file in real-time is NOT a limitation of nano. It
would be very annoying for an editor to do this. As far as I know every
editor I have ever found load the edited file into a buffer and won't
update the disk file until the next deliberate write, or sometimes it
will write a temporary file periodically.
It would be quite easy to write a client program that reads text from a
common server which the tutor is using to type notes. You could get it
to only read or print a line on the screen every time a line-end
(carriage return) is received.

Honestly, I can't use it, and last time I checked it didn't work with
the Braille display. Braille is a requirement for this project.

I'm not even sure there's a debian/raspbian package for google docs, but
they do what you want. I'm guessing the inability to refresh as you type is
a limitation of nano which I'm not sure has been updated since I got my
first linux box in 2004 or so.
