Well, being a new comer to the list, I've known practically nothing
about the pi, and now I have one to play with until I get the rev 3's
this week when they come in. I hope what I have to say, long-winded
though it may be, will be encouragement to others, because this little
piece of tech is the most fun I've had in a good long time as far as
computers go. so here goes.
After reading up on all of what to do as far as setting up the
hardware and writing the image, I did just that. Went to the site and
got the latest Raspbian and wrote the image.
Not having an hdmi set, or even composite video, I ssh'ed into it and
found that I could do pretty much whatever I needed to at the command
line. After trying a bunch of things, I was pleasantly surprised that
espeak and espeakup were both in the repo, and installed just fine,
thus a working speakup.
After getting mocp to play music, and monitoring through the headphone
jack on a little speaker, I thought I'd just test it on my main system
to see how good it sounded.
Well, it sounded reaaaaaaaaly good when I gave it some decent level,
for about 30 seconds, and then wham! silence, which was not golden.
So now I get to learn how to configure a usb audio device since I
suspect I've fried the headphone out on this poor critter, but the pi
itself still works fine.
The one thing I couldn't do was get the desktop to come up, at least
not talking, as I suspect that more then the gnome-orca package and
whatever dependencies came with it will be required.
Good thing I'm getting the other ones soon, at least I now know better
then to use the headphone out for anything then... urrrrm
headphones... How about that!
Well, enough of my rambling for now, after a little break, off to play
with it some more.

Ps: any help with getting orca to work with lxde would be most
welcome. If it's been done I'd love to know how, preferably with
Raspbian.
