Well, hey there! As it happens, that's what I should have tried, but
didn't. The good thing is, though I went around the problem desidedly
the hard way, I did find that my headphone jack still works after all.
At least I know what I have to do to fix things from here though.
And thankfully, the Pi is no longer silent. and I'm really looking
forward to the 3.

Did you try alsactl init to try and reset your sound hardware? Speech
dispatcher should work on the model 3 b plus at least it did for me. You may
have to play around with changing the sound driver to pulse/alsa/libao. The
audio bugs seem to have almost entirely gone away with the pi model 3. On

After getting mocp to play music, and monitoring through the headphone

to see how good it sounded.
Well, it sounded reaaaaaaaaly good when I gave it some decent level,
for about 30 seconds, and then wham! silence, which was not golden.
So now I get to learn how to configure a usb audio device since I
suspect I've fried the headphone out on this poor critter, but the pi
itself still works fine.
The one thing I couldn't do was get the desktop to come up, at least
not talking, as I suspect that more then the gnome-orca package and
whatever dependencies came with it will be required.
Good thing I'm getting the other ones soon, at least I now know better
then to use the headphone out for anything then... urrrrm
headphones... How about that!
Well, enough of my rambling for now, after a little break, off to play
with it some more.

Ps: any help with getting orca to work with lxde would be most
welcome. If it's been done I'd love to know how, preferably with
Raspbian.
