Thanks. The pseudo-make install did the trick. It created a needed symbolic
link. Now I have speech. Who Ray!

I don't fully understand what make or the build.sh script do, but I'm
pretty sure building this lib is a prerequisite for piespeakup. At the
very least, this worked for me on my Pis using the same image and I
succeeded in walking a less experienced friend through it via e-mail.
