Glenn, Is this a 'prolific' chip-set adaptor (PL2303)? If it is it's pretty much like the one I have and when I plug it in and boot Raspbian it's assigned the device '/dev/ttyUSB0'. I use mine to connect to a digital multimeter I have with a serial interface. Works very well.
