Hmmm. Interesting to know. Even at USB 3.x speeds, that is still going to be a
bottleneck if you are doing other things that require large amounts of
bandwidth (such as a remote SDR receiver) SO, as a media storage device using
external drives, this might present some issues when playing back high
bandwidth media (like BlueRay videos or 4k video streams)
Btw, this is some of the same methodology Apple has been using in some of their
later hardware (like the MacBook Air, etc) It cuts down on the amount of
physical hardware needed without providing too much of a performance hit for
most tasks.
Btw, will the Pi Foundation be developing a more advance Pi unit with ethernet
on it’s own buss port as well as Wi-Fi with an external Antenna port? This
would certainly boost performance on both ethernet and Wi-Fi without adding too
much hardware to the mix.

Pranav, thanks for the reminder, I should have mentioned, the drive is
in a powered USB case, plug in to the wall, the other is the USB in to
the pi.
Both the Pi 3b+ and my router have USB 2 ports so I'm not going from
say USB3 to USB2 they both have the same kind of port, the Pi 3b+ has
a quad core and a gig of ram, the router has a single core 600 MHz and
only 256MB of ram.
