Today I banded 6 Rufous Hummingbirds in e. TN. This is a new personal
record for most winter hummers in a day (the previous high being 5 in
KY). I successfully captured and banded all the birds that I tried for.
I was also able to confirm the identify of another bird (an HY-M
Ruby-throat just west of Knoxville) that we were not able to secure
permission to band. In Gray, I had assistance from Rick Knight, and in
the Knoxville area, I had assistance from Dean Edwards and Kelly Roy.
Thanks, guys.

The six Rufouses were:
1 HY-F & 1 AHY-F in Gray, TN (previously reported by James Brooks)
1 HY-M in Blount County (previously reported as possible Black-chin -
sorry!)
1 HY-M in Knoxville
2 AHY-F in Knoxville

At present, here are the undocumented (for this season) birds of which I
am aware in TN:
Rufous/Allen's in Ooltewah
Ruby-throat HY-M in Solway (just w. of Knoxville)
Rufous in Knoxville (the famous Stierberger bird)
Unidentified in Sharp's Chapel (Union Co.)
Unidentified in Tellico Village (Loudoun Co.)
Unidentified in Memphis (not sure if this bird is still around)

There are also three undocumented birds in KY of which I am aware:
Rufous/Allen's in Louisville
Unknown in Lexington
Rufous/Allen's in Madison Co.

There is also a bird in west Nashville that is a bit of a mystery.
Portia Macmillan and I banded it about a week and a half ago, but are
still not completely certain of the ID. It's either a Rufous or a
Broad-tailed, but opinions vary widely. I'm hoping next week to try to
capture the call note on video so that some of the other hummer experts
can have an opportunity to study it.

I will update my TN-KY winter hummer web page over the next couple of
days after I recover from my 660 mile trek. I have a considerable
amount of updated information, so it will take a bit of time.
