May 18, 2005 Shelby Farms Shelby Co., TN This morning at about 9:00, I saw a small flycatcher at Shelby Farms. I recognized it was an Empidonax, because of its small size, tail-flipping, and a faint eye-ring. It was in a willow tree, so thought it could very well be a Willow Flyc., but wasn't going to i.d. the bird without hearing it. We (Carolyn Bullock, Barbara Wilson, and I) stayed in the same area for about ten minutes after the bird had disappeared from view. At that point it started singing, as all of us could hear it, and I knew it was an Alder. It sang a dozen or more times, with the second syllable accented, and usually the soft third note was audible. We were parked at the small parking area as you go up the hill, past the lake and visitor center, where a one-way road comes in from the right. The bird was along this one-way road, about 200 yards east of the parking area. Rob Peeples Germantown, TN P.S. Other migrants at Shelby Farms today included Veery, Black-throated Green Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group.
