2/02/03 Allen's Hummingbird Harville residence Elmwood, TN I arrived at the Harville residence in Elmwood, TN at about 8:00 this morning. I had only been there a few minutes when the Allen's Hummer appeared at the feeder for a few seconds and was off again. I got good looks at the bird perched in the line of trees just to the left of the house (as you are facing the house), and also perched on the TV antennae. After 30-40 minutes the bird did come back to the feeder, for a minute or so. It was a lousy day for photography, between practically no light and a howling wind. I did get some semi-decent shots of the bird, if anyone is interested. These don't show the tail so aren't ID'able to species, but this colorful little guy is worth looking at anyway. After the bird left the feeder this 2nd time, Jan Shaw and Phillip Casteel arrived. It took close to an hour for the bird to finally show up back in the trees so we could get another look. Then, it finally came back to the feeder for a brief fuel-up. I was there a little over 3 hours, and saw the bird use the feeder 3 times. It may take a little patience to get the bird at the feeder, but keeping a sharp eye on the surrounding areas might yield the bird before it hits the feeder. I would like to thank both Chris Sloan and Portia Macmillan for banding and getting the word out about this bird, and also for clearing our presence with the hosts. I talked to Mrs. Harville for awhile, she is an exceedingly nice host who is obviously proud of her little jewel. She is going to have a hopping place for a little while, she told me there is a group from Atlanta that is supposed to be their this afternoon. 400 miles well spent on my part! Good birding!!!!
