This seems to have gone out without my text on the first try; apologies!

From Alderferer et al., the NGS "Complete Birds of NA" (the desktop
volume): "Outer tail feathers thinly edged in white on outer webs."
This could be helpful in picking out a Tree from a flock of Field or
Chipping Sparrows, though I have found the "cheedle-ee" call,
slightly larger size, and notably bolder wingbars the most useful
"flash" characters to snap on to the presence of an "odd" bird in the
flock. Honestly, though, everywhere I have lived where Am. Tree
Sparrows were common, you hardly ever saw them and the other
Spizellas at the same time since the other species didn't winter and
the Trees arrived so late in fall and left so early in spring they
scarcely overlapped. So, this is the first place have really even
had to address this matter of finding a Tree among Fields or Chippies!
