While we don’t enjoy being confined to the house by ice and snow and certainly feel sympathy for those trapped on the roads, it was a beautiful birding day here. At daylight I moved our car to the far side of the two-car carport; the birds are so smart they learned from the last snow storm to be there before I could move the car. I put down about two days worth of seed and before I could get out of sight they were covering the ground. About lunch time they had consumed that seed and so I put down more and the activity has continued all afternoon. There are so many White-throated Sparrows we stopped counting and Juncos and Goldfinches are everywhere. We’ve never seen more than two Towhees in our yard but suddenly there were three males and one female in their beautiful attire. But the highlight of the day were one of our favorite wintertime birds – Fox Sparrows. In the last snow we were so excited to finally see two of them at once. Today there were six under the carport at one time and then when I looked down below the living room window a seventh was scratching – this one with no tail feathers. Missing again are White-crowned Sparrows, although a birding friend on the other side of town has dozens, and the Pine Siskins we had earlier in the winter.
