Chris, James, and others, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has past records of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers along the rugged, minimally-used western edge. Though those are gone, Bachman's Sparrows (BASP) use the same type of habitat, and are in fact a bit more open to change. Because of this, some folks in the park believe there is a possibility of BASP being in the park. I've been asked to go out and look, but have not had a chance this year. It's getting late enough that a search might not turn them up even if they are here, but next time you are in the area between Cades Cove and the Foothill Parkway, keep an eye and ear open whenever you're around pines. Remember that this is a species that is pretty durn quiet within a couple hours after first light. Also keep in mind that it is against park rules to use calls (such as from a tape player) to illicit a response from any animal including birds, without a permit. The park has recently burned the former location of RCW colonies and is monitoring the area for any developments with this or other species. The new park designation is the "Tabcat Burn Area" Charlie --- Chris Sloan <chris.sloan@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > > Although this bird nests in Tennessee every year, their habitat is > somewhat mercurial, and so they're precise locations are not > necessarily > known every summer.
