I went to Bell’s Bend Park near Nashville at 8 am today to search for the barn
owl. After reading Jerry Webb’s post, I approached the barn (about 1 km down
the hill in back of the nature center) very slowly. Still, when I got about 30
meters from the front of the barn I saw it fly out the front door. It must be a
very nervous bird. I also came yesterday about 3 pm to look for it, but did not
see it. There were several screaming kids in the campground area, and I’m
guessing they had spooked the owl away. I am very sorry that I flushed the owl.
I hope it will return. It seems to me that the park service needs to put
protective measures in place(crime tape?). I don’t know what is usually done in
cases like this. I am waiting in the parking lot now in hopes of speaking with
the ranger when and if he/she arrives.
Oh, another thing-it is quite dark in the barn, especially on a rainy day like
this one. It will be a bit difficult to see or photograph the owl from more
than 30 meters from the front of the barn.
