Beaman Park
Davidson County
Saturday, April 30, 2011
9 - 11:30 am
Sunny, mild temperatures, with some strong breezes

I got off to a late birding start this morning at Beaman Park, but ran into
Tony Lance in the lower parking lot off Little Marrowbone Rd. We birded
together along the creek up to the bridge that goes up to the nature center.
Tony had to turn around at this point and I continued up the ridge to
complete the Henry Hollow Loop trail.

Along the creek it was relatively quiet, but there were a few vocal
ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS that proved visually elusive. We also heard N. PARULA,
WORM-EATING WARBLER, KENTUCKY WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, TENNESSEE
WARBLER, and a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. We also spotted a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
on
it's nest in the branch of a Shag-Bark Hickory tree near the bridge.

Heading up and along the top of the ridge, the birds were more active, and
more visually cooperative. The Tennessee Warblers were very vocal and
plentiful, and I was able to get some good looks at two of them. I was also
able
to get a good look at a Worm-Eating Warbler. A couple of more Kentucky
Warblers made their presence known vocally, and I also heard BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, RED-EYED VIREO, and EASTERN PEWEE.

I got a good look at a singing and feeding BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER,
and also saw SWAINSON'S THRUSH, INDIGO BUNTING, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK,
PILEATED WOODPECKER, and an actively mating pair of SCARLET TANAGERS. I got
brief but clear looks at a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER (thanks to Tony for the quick
lesson on their song, otherwise I probably would have missed it) and a
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO.
