May 2, 2005 TN-MS-AR I spent the weekend with Paul Lehman, Mike Todd, Kenny and LaDonna Nichols working on Paul's state lists. As most of you know, Paul works on the distribution maps for most of the bird field guides we all use in the today. You learned a lot just following him around, about where the birds are and are not, this weekend was a treat and education for us. Paul holds the record for the top ticker list or the total checks on all the field check lists of the 50 states, some where around 16,000 now, I think. This Saturday afternoon, Paul reached another mile stone, having attained the ABA threshold in all 50 states with a Black-bellied Plover in Raft Creek Bottoms Management Area in White Co, Arkansas. We had to try real hard so the record bird was not a Eurasian-Collared Dove or House Finch, which we knocked off in Bald Knob shortly before;o) Our total for the long weekend before Mike and I had to peel off Sunday afternoon was 185 species with some real surprises. Kenny and LaDonna continued on and added Red-cockaded Woodpecker and Bachman's Sparrow to Paul's ever growing list. Kenny and Mike might have some details to add. We had lots of great looks at a lot of exciting birds, including a late Surf Scoter at the Bald Knob treatment lagoons. Paul is now in Oklahoma and goes back to MO before heading home and then in a week is off leading field trips again. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
