Dec. 25, 2003 Ark-TN I had some time to go over the bridge to Arkansas and spent some time searching through 4 huge flocks of Snow Geese that were feeding in various fields west of Wapanocca NWR. In these flocks I counted 38-61-9 and 47 Ross's Geese, 155 a new high number for me in Arkansas. There is no telling how many could be counted in a day and the vast majority of those were immature birds. I also saw good numbers of Red-tailed Hawks and at one location had 11 in view at one time. Totals for the morning, 27 Eastern, 2 Western light morph, 2 dark morph, 2 Krider's intergrades and one adult Krider's plus 6 that were too shy to sit still for an ID at any distance. Still good numbers of Laps (hundreds) and Western Meadowlarks (11) at two locations. I spent the balance of the time on President's Island in Memphis, looking for the Long-tailed Duck, nada. I did count a very large number of Eurasian Collared-Doves in several areas, 469, also a new high for me, anywhere. They were mostly hunkered down taking a midday rest, making counting pretty easy. I had 132 in one large Cottonwood that had a Red-tail sitting about midway up on the outside, there was a nice semicircle of empty seating formed by the doves not wanting to get too close to big red. Of course when you get that many Eurasian Collared-Doves together there are sprinklings of all kinds of regressive plumage's from almost white to pretty dark. A quick run through at the pits and TVA revealed nothing new. Lots more gulls, of the 3 expected species in the area. Happy Holidays and Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
