The Clarksville Christmas Bird Count was held last Saturday January 4, 2014 under cold, mostly sunny, and windy weather conditions. Temperatures ranged from 25 degrees F at the start to a high of 46, and winds increased from 9 mph at the start to 20 mph during late morning/early afternoon (gusting to 30). Twenty three field counters in 7 parties (and 3 feeder counters) observed a total of 78 species; 2 count week species (Red-breasted Merganser & Barn Owl) were also observed. This count ties the second highest Clarksville count. Highlights: Waterfowl made a good showing despite the mostly frozen smaller bodies of water. Bald Eagle 3 – 1 adult, 2 immature Least Sandpiper 1 – only 2nd record on count (1997) Eurasian Collared-Dove 2 – only 2nd record on count (2008) Vesper Sparrow 1 – only 3rd record on count (1975, 1976) Lincoln’s Sparrow 1 – only 2nd record on count (1974) Lapland Longspur 1 – only 2nd record on count (1988) New species for the count: Bufflehead (2), Red-breasted Merganser (CW) New high counts: Eastern Phoebe (18), Savannah Sparrow (115) Misses for the count include: Northern Bobwhite, Eastern Screech Owl, Loggerhead Shrike, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Purple Finch, and Rusty Blackbird.
