Gibson County Lake,
East of Trenton, Gibson County
January 10-11, 2014

I went by Gibson County Lake this afternoon to what changes had occurred. The mix of birds was very different from yesterday. Yesterday I had 150 Canada Geese, 8 Gr. White-fronted Geese, 200 Mallards, 31 Gadwall, 12 Am. Wigeon, 2 N. Pintail, 8 N. Shovelers, 3 Green-winged Teal, 64 Canvasback, 6 Redheads, 45 Ring-necked Ducks, 4 Lesser Scaup, 8 Common Goldeneye, and 6 Ruddy Ducks. There were also 8 Am. Coots, 6 Ring-billed Gulls, one Bonaparte's Gull, and a lone Bald Eagle. No loons, grebes, or scoters were seen.

What a difference a day makes! Today there were no geese and only a sprinkling of Mallards. There was one Canvasback, 2 Common Goldeneye, a female COMMON MERGANSER, and 6 Ruddy Ducks. Whiile scoping the open water, I came across two loons - one Common Loon and one RED-THROATED LOON! I continued to scope and came across a group of 6 Horned Grebes with one RED-NECKED GREBE! I also caught a brief glimpse of a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER in flight, presumably the same bird I saw earlier in the week. There were also 40 Am. Coots and one Bald Eagle.

I've been out there 4 times this week and its been different almost every day.
I can't wait to see what shows up there next!

I had a single Fish Crow in a flock of Am. Crows just west of Trenton on Hwy. 104.

Good birding!

Mark Greene
Trenton, TN
Gibson County

<a href="http://overview.mail.yahoo.com?.src=iOS";>

Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone
