Thanks, Jeff R. Wilson, for your comments about the Common Loon
in the small pond at Adair Park- Knoxville. The thought
certainly had crossed our minds about the limited size of the
pond (~40'x 70'), & more takeoff room being needed. At first we
thought the Loon's wing or leg might be injured, as it was
tooling around w/ just 1 leg. But after observing for awhile, we
saw it stretch out both wings, use both legs, then dive under
the water. To the naked eye, it looks to be ok. It has been on
this pond for at least 11 days now...

I called TWRA, & talked to biologist Pete Wyatt, who said he
would contact someone local w/ TWRA to check it out. With that
imposing dagger-like beak, it's for sure that only someone w/
experience should remove it if that becomes necessary.

It's funny, I used to travel to Minnesota & the upper peninsula
of Michigan frequently for business, but only saw Common Loons
there on the Great Lakes from long distances away. Now I see
this one, in Knoxville no less, from just 20' away. We will post
more later on this strange episode.
