[TN-Bird] Common Nighthawks & Whip-poor-wills this evening: southern Cumberland County, TN, Aug 30, 2012

This evening (Thursday, 30 Aug. 2012) while riding along a 4 mile stretch of
road in southern Cumberland County about 5:45 PM (sunset was at 7:08 PM), I saw
an estimated 60 Common Nighthawks hunting and flying in a generally southeast
direction at a height of 50 to 100 feet. I assume there were likely very many
more since I was with others in the car and we didn't slow down for the birds.
(Two years ago [29 Aug 2010] and a few miles away, I had estimated 150
nighthawks in a hunting/migrating flock spread over a half mile diameter area.)

About two hours later I heard a Whip-poor-will singing from woods near the
house. I went in for binoculars, flashlight, and iPod; when I came out I heard
one in a different location giving a "cluck" call. I played a recording and
then heard two birds singing (the "cluck" bird switched to singing
"whip-poor-will"). Neither could be seen by flashlight nor apparently had
approached. (This is the ninth time in 5 years that I've heard Whip-poor-wills
from the house , none being in June.)

Not content with only 2 species of nightjars, I tried for chucks, but to no
avail. (Why do I always end up disappointed?)
