I had an unexpected good day on the north half of Songbird trail below Norris Dam (Anderson Co.) today. Some pretty good looks with the highlight being a beautiful creamsicle orange Prothonotary Warbler who was very cooperative and a few feet over my head at one point. 11:50am - 2:30pm: American Redstart - 2-3 f Black-and-white warbler - 3+ Black-throated green warbler - 1 f Blue-winged warbler - 2 f Cape May warbler - 1 f Chestnut-sided warbler - ~5 juv. Hooded warbler - 2 (1 singing m, f) Northern Parula - 2-3 juv. Prothonotary warbler - 1 Yellow warbler - 1 f Yellow-throated warbler - 3+ (sycamore trees) Worm-eating warbler - 1 Red-eyed vireo - 1 Yellow-throated vireo - 3+ singing White-eyed vireo - 3+ singing Scarlet tanager - 1-2 Orchard Oriole - 1 m Ruby-throated hummingbird - 2 Eastern wood pewee - 5+ Eastern kingbird - 2 (ad. w/ juv.) Cedar waxwing - 2 Hairy woodpecker - 1 Red-shouldered hawk - 1 Red-tailed hawk - 1-2 first Monarch butterfly of the fall was seen here too - 1 Checked out Eagle Bend fish hatchery in Clinton afterwards but didn't see the Buff-breasted Sandpiper Ron and Dollyann had. I could well have missed it if it was in the grass. Also wanted to mention the male Blackburnian warbler I saw on 8/22 on the Middle Prong trail in the GSMNP. It was at ~2100 feet elevation. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this was more likely a northern migrant or a local breeder below its normal elevation range? Shane Williams Knoxville, TN
