This afternoon while cleaning out the nest of a pesky House Sparrow from my Purple Martin nesting gourds, I saw my first Baltimore Oriole of the year. Man, what color! BTW, I have 8 pairs of martins and 6 have started building their nests, and thanks to the starling resistant crescent-shaped entrance holes I added to the gourds over the winter, my colony has been starling free this year! The bluebird box in the yard now has a clutch of 5 eggs. Late this afternoon I had no less than 15 Eastern Kingbirds that I think had just arrived today because these were the first ones that I'd seen or heard. At dusk tonight we had 3 Great Horned Owls calling and we were able to watch two of them from my yard as they sat in the top of an old dead tree that's often used as a Red-tailed Hawk hunting perch in the daytime. Pretty neat, I just hope they stay away from my martin colony! Good birding (2 days and I'm Dauphin bound!), Mark Greene Trenton, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Topographical Maps located at http://topozone.com/find.asp * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Tennessee Ornithological Society web site at http://www.tnbirds.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net Owner: Wallace Coffey, Bristol, TN jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx (423) 764-3958 =========================================================
