Don't turkeys eat cicadas? Besides the birds, I think that fox and coyote eat these crunchy critters as well. My favorite dog of all time, I found as a little starving puppy eating cicadas a few years ago when we had a cyclic hatching in Mississippi (forgotten which cicada, and whether it was the 13 or the 17, etc.) My parents noted that we had very little bird predation that year in our blueberry orchard. I have also noticed that when it rained, the leaf litter under the trees was carried down into the little holes the cicadas leave when they burrow up from the roots, so that must be good for the soils, better drainage, texture, organic matter, etc. ....all kinds of good things happen with these big natural cycles. Now if we could just make something useful of all that noise they make!
