A short trip to Cove Lake this morning at the observation deck and short loop trail produced spring firsts WOOD THRUSH along with the first COMMON YELLOWTHROATED WARBLER. There were 2 or more Prothonotary Warblers singing away as well as Yellow Throated Warblers. A couple Green Herons were about, the first I have seen there this Spring also. I ran into Boyd Sharp and Tony Headrick and we headed up the mountain to look for the larks. There were very few warblers singing on the way up Cross Mt. today. It was rather dreary, cold and light rain off and on. The trees in this elevation (apx1500 up) are still not leafed out . A few Black and White Warblers/Black Th. green and 2 Ovenbirds were heard on the way to the top. The HORNED LARKS on top put on a fine show for us with mating displays. Amazing how high up the males fly, hovering in mid air over and over and then descending altitude and suddenly dives the last few hundred feet looking almost like a Perigrine in descent.
