At Wal-Mart Distribution Center (Pottertown Road in Midway community) this evening: American Avocet (6--well advanced toward breeding plumage, with quite a bit of rufous on the head and neck). At Riverside Plantation subdivision (end of Buckingham Road along the Nolichuckey River) this afternoon: Dunlin (2--1 still in basic plumage, 1 mostly in basic plumage but with a bit of rufous on the back and a black splotch or two on the belly). As far as I know, today's avocets represent only the second occurrence of the species in Greene County. The first was in late September 1999 (one bird), also at WMDC. Dunlin are occasional transients in the county, with most sightings occurring in the fall. Before today, my earliest observation of Dunlin was April 19 (2000).
