5/4/12 Cross Mountain, Campbell County Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery, Anderson County Lola and I spent Saturday morning from about 8:00 to 10:30 on Cross Mountain near Caryville, TN. Most of the time was spent on the upper old coal mining bench that is probably the most popular for birding. It is bench on the left-hand side going up Mountain Road and is a very sharp right hand bend of Mountain Road. It was socked in with fog below so this was the first good viewing area. Lots of singing with the Golden-winged Warbler singing steadily. We moved up to the top when the fog rolled up hill and saw several Chestnut-sided Warblers and Ovenbirds around the new kiosk for Cumberland Mountain Trail on Tower Road (gravel road on the right at the top). The fog kept rolling up the mountain so we headed down to Cove Lake State Park to try and find the Swainson's Warbler seen recently. We didn't make it as we ran into Tony Headrick's group that had heard a Black-billed Cuckoo on the bench. Everyone got great looks (even scope views that allowed the red orbital ring to be viewed). Tony's group had started out at Cove Lake and heard two Swainson's Warblers. On the way back to Oak Ridge, we made a brief stop at the Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery in Clinton. There were lots of swallows working the grass mostly Cliff Swallows and several ponds in the back (south) had shorebirds where we picked out two White-rumped Sandpipers with a group of Least Sandpipers. These were very cooperative and allowed us to get long looks with the scope while they preened.
