Last Saturday (Apr 28) the Cumberland County Spring Bird Count was held. There were 8-9 observers in 5-6 parties, and we found 128 species. There were relatively few migrants. Most notable was a flock of 21 Willets resting on the small beach at the resort motel at Holiday Lake in Crossville (first county record, Ed LeGrand). The Mute Swan was still at Lake Tansi (found by Doug Downs). It has been there the past two winters, but was not seen last spring or summer. It has been seen in flight, and it (presumably the same bird) was found once at Lake Breckenridge about 2 miles away. Large numbers of Whip-poor-wills are routinely found in the cutover areas in the southwestern part of the county along Newton Rd. and side roads. Occasionally they are seen in the road (as were 3 of the 42 birds heard in 2 hours and 20 miles before dawn). The Chestnut-sided Warblers were all near or at the top of Hinch Mt., and the Cerulean Warblers were all on nearby Brady Mt. (Jewett Rd.) and the road up Hinch Mt. (usual breeding locations for both species) (Steve Stedman). 107 Canada Goose 1 Mute Swan 23 Wood Duck 27 Mallard 5 Blue-winged Teal 1 Bufflehead 5 Northern Bobwhite 7 Wild Turkey 1 Common Loon 3 Double-crested Cormorant 2 Great Blue Heron 3 Green Heron 1 Black Vulture 41 Turkey Vulture 3 Cooper's Hawk 11 Red-shouldered Hawk 10 Broad-winged Hawk 5 Red-tailed Hawk 9 American Kestrel 5 American Coot 23 Killdeer 3 Spotted Sandpiper 11 Solitary Sandpiper 1 Greater Yellowlegs 21 Willet 1 Least Sandpiper 3 Wilson's Snipe 1 American Woodcock 12 Rock Pigeon 155 Mourning Dove 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 2 Great Horned Owl 6 Barred Owl 4 Chuck-will's-widow 46 E.
