Yesterday morning, Saturday Feb. 13, I saw a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk along Hillendale Rd. in southern Cumberland County. This was at the area of large hay fields where the Short-eared Owls were seen last winter (but none this winter), and where a dark Rough-legged Hawk showed up on March 3, 2009. I checked for the bird this morning (Sunday) without success. Yesterday's bird was dark brownish-black above and below, but seen from above it had a white base of the tail with a fairly wide solid black band at the end of the tail (distinguishing it from Harlan's and typical of a female). From below, the primaries and secondaries were silvery, contrasting with the dark front of the wing. Above, the wings were uniformly dark (typical of an adult). I reread my description of the bird from last year, and I suspect that it might have been the same individual, especially given that I didn't have a close look at the bird sitting in good light this time. Yesterday, I had a fairly close view of it flying away, then distantly flying around before it landed in a tree perhaps 3/4 mile away. When I later got within several hundred yards, it flew off, giving me a distant scope view again. -Ed LeGrand Crossville, Cumberland Co., TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
