Did some birding in west Knox County late morning/early to mid afternoon today, Sunday, Feb. 14. Started at the wetland behind Dalen on Gilbert Road, looking for waterfowl. Found Gadwalls, Mallards, an American Coot and a male/female pair of Green-Winged Teal. There were 20-30 Gadwalls and Mallards but I have a hard time IDing flying ducks. I managed to see 8+ Gadwalls on the water and a male Mallard. Big surprise came when I was back at my car. Yellow-rumped Warblers were plentiful in the marsh but in a tree beside the gravel area where I parked I found a first for me, an Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler. I was looking at this small bird with a brilliant yellow throat thinking, what the heck is that, it doesn't look like a pine warbler, when it turned and showed me its yellow rump. Then it was gone. At the Cove in Concord Park I found the first Palm Warbler I've seen in a few months but Horned Grebes were hard to come by. They've been much less in evidence this winter than usual. In fact I was there an hour and a half before I finally spotted one on the far side of the Yacht Club. A Pied-Billed Grebe was much closer but was the only one I found. Sometimes I'll see 15-20 Pied-bills way out. Dark-eyed Juncoes were numerous and I briefly heard the song of a Brown-headed Nuthatch. Two Ruby-crowned Kinglets but no Golden-crowns though I had two foraging down low in a pine treeat the Cove a few days ago. Again counted 9 Great Blue Herons in the heronry across Northshore from the Cove. At least two were sitting on nests. Yesterday (Saturday) I was surprised to see a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker at my groundl level birdbath in the back yard. It was also very popular with the local Robins and an itinerant flock of Cedar Waxwings.
