Saturday, February 20, 2010 Duck River Unit, Humphrey's County After a few weeks hiatus from our Saturday adventures to Duck River Bottoms we headed back there this afternoon. We were greeted by the usual cast of characters...Mallards, Coots, American Widgeons were abundant with lesser amounts of Ring-necked ducks, Shovelers, Gadwalls and Green-winged Teal. We saw a few Canvasbacks, Greater White-fronted Geese, Canada Geese, Bufflehead, a couple pairs of Redheads, Pintails and American Black Ducks. Only gulls were Ringed-billed. We saw a couple dozen Double-crested Cormorants on the wing and a large number of Robins, Meadowlarks and Killdeer in the open fields. A belted Kingfisher crossed our path and on the trail to the Pintail Point Observation blind we were greeted by a Red-bellied woodpecker, a Northern Flicker and a Pileated Woodpecker who was none to happy to see us! But most notable was the Heron Rookery that seemed to have at least 120 Herons on an island in the middle of the Duck River. While standing there scoping them out several sparrows including 3 Le Conte's Sparrows appeared and fed on a grassy mudflat close to the roadside. Other sparrows for the day were Song, Field, Savannah, White-throated, Chipping and Swamp. It was good to be back there...we've begun the countdown to March 15th when we can once again explore the rest of the refuge. Happy Birding...
