8/7/12 Duck River Unit TNWR, Humphreys Co I finally got out to do some local birding today, first time since mid-May. Haven't seen a Tricolored Heron in TN in several years now, so thought I would head over to Duck River. Naturally, looked like the river level must be up, as there were no islands out anywhere, and I had very few shorebirds overall. Besides Killdeer, a few Solitary, Spotted, Pectoral, Least Sandpipers and Semi Plovers along with a handful of Semi Sands and a single Western; no long-legged birds at all. Only tern was Caspian, with over 100 in the air at one time. Spent most of my time looking around pool 1, over 2 trips there and about 3 hours. My first trip was unsuccessful in searching for Tricolored, though the Sandhill Crane was on the island area in the middle of pool 1, cooling it under a cypress tree. I came back to pool 1 after visiting other parts of the refuge, and finally found a young Tricolored Heron, out basically in the middle of the pool going from stump to stump; while watching it, it flew by the 2nd Tricolored which was also on a stump, which I hadn't seen up to that point. They never came in very close at all, probably 150 yards at the minimum. Generally the two stayed fairly close to each other, but worked all over the pool. Some patience may be required for these birds. Only other thing of much interest, are the previously reported Sedge Wrens. I heard at least a dozen singing, but had no luck in picking one up visually until I had one singing/working very near the road. I have posted a few photos from the day in a new gallery. Nothing great, some distant shots of the Tricoloreds, and a few other odds and ends. They are in the following gallery: http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/summer_fall_2012 , or the first image starts here: http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/image/145254484/original Good Birding!!
