After an attempt last night to observe the synchronous fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we headed to the western section of the Foothills Parkway (Blount Co.) to listen for night birds. At the second viewing area on the left as you ascend the parkway from Walland, we pulled over to park and immediately started hearing nightjars. Between 23:45 (06/11/2011) - 00: 20 (06/12/2011), we heard one Whippoorwill and up to four Chucks-Will's-Widows. An additional Chuck was heard on the short drive back down to the main road after midnight. No owls were heard. Though this was only the second time we've visited this location for this purpose, the parkway and this specific pullout have been extremely consistent for nightjars. It also offers a great night view out over the mountains on evenings like last night during which there was a lot of moonlight and dramatic lightning to the north. The lack of owls on the parkway was compensated for by the Eastern Screech-owl that Seth heard whinny outside our home in west Knoxville soon after returning home around 01:30.
