Saturday afternoon, 4/5/08, around 1 pm just below the Fort Loudoun Dam in Lenoir City (Loudon County), Tennessee, the water was a study in black and white as I counted 269 Double Crested Cormorants mixed in with about 100 Ring Billed Gulls. Four Black Crowned Night Herons were standing at the foot of the spillway. The 269 was surely a low count as some of the cormorants left while I was counting. I then met up with Tony King and we visited the 3 Great Blue Heron rookeries near the dam that we're monitoring for the Tennessee Colonial Breeding Birds Survey. Tony indicated that like numbers of cormorants had been present Friday as well. Later in the day I counted 15 Black Crowned Night Herons at the dam. Two Osprey were at their nest atop a pylon next to the parking lot for the lowest overlook and another two were spotted by Tony from the boat ramp atop a pylon on the Tellico Dam side. One of the nesting Bald Eagles was on its perch near the nest across the water, we heard an Eastern Meadowlark and saw many swallows -- Tree, Barn and Northern Rough-Winged. At the GBH heronries we counted 67 nests, at least 57 of which were active, many having sitting herons. And they're still building.
