Hatchie NWR (Haywood Co)O'neal Lake and Windrow Rd
I spent a few hours at Hatchie this morning, both to check for migrants and
play with new camera lens. Not a lot of activity at O'neal Lake, no waterbirds
to speak of other than a few Solitary Sandpipers, and a Lesser Yellowlegs and
Blue-winged Teal. Also drove out Windrow Rd, though didn't go down Powell Rd
today.
Lots of song from local breeders, with Prothonotary, Northern Parula and
Yellow-throated seemingly everywhere. Biggest pleasant surprise, was four
singing Swainson's Warblers along Windrow Rd, one of which was quite luckily
singing away from a perch very near the road and with a clear hole to look thru
for a few photos. Migrants on the day included Tennessee, Nashville, Northern
Waterthrush and multiple Palm and Yellow-rumps. A few Yellow-throated and
Red-eyed Vireos were around, with White-eyed everywhere. Other firsts for me
were Indigo Bunting, Orchard Oriole and Eastern Kingbirds, as well as singing
Acadian and Great Crested Flycatchers.
I've posted a few photos in these two checklists for anyone interested:
