On Saturday, May 14, in conjunction with International Migratory Bird Day, the Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS hosted a bird walk at Sycamore Shoals State Park, Elizabethton, Carter Co., TN. The walk, led by Bryan Stevens, was held from 8-10:30 a.m. Attending were Yvette Fuller, Jacki Hinshaw, Pat Walls, David Thometz and Brookie and Jean Potter. Highlights included male, female and first-year male Orchard Orioles, a male Baltimore Oriole, two Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Gray Catbird, American Redstart, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Red-eyed Vireos, White-eyed Vireo and a perched, calling Eastern Wood-Pewee. Thanks to a spotting scope provided by the Potters, walk participants enjoyed fantastic looks at the Eastern Wood-Pewee, a Northern Flicker and some other birds. The scope also came in very useful when we visited one of the nests of the Yellow-crowned Night-Herons. We found a single heron standing vigil on the nest, and everyone got great looks through the scope at the bird. We didn't see a wide range of bird species, but participants enjoyed some quality observations of some often hard-to-observe birds.
