Three nests of the Cliff Swallow were found under U.S. 421 bridge over
Beaverdam Stream in Shady Valley, Johnson Co, Monday (5/9) today. Only one was
fully constructed. The other two are mostly finished but need a little work.
No Cliff Swallows were present but there were plenty of roudy Barn Swallows
zipping around and working on nests at the same location. This may be the
highest elevation (2,800 feet) nesting record for this species in the state.
Had first Willow Flycatcher of the season at Quarry Bog, Shady Valley, Johnson
Co., TN. Monday (5/9).

First Red-winged Blackbird nest (4-eggs) of the year and that was at Orchard
Bog.

Three (3) Solitary Sandpipers were also found along Beaverdam Stream.

Found two different low elevation locations today in Shady Valley with a
singing Dark-eyed Juncos. Both were at about 2,200 feet. Junco distribution
in the breeding season was first detected in that region at 2200 ft. on 8 Jun
1997. A bird was found singing then along Rt. 133 at Stillhouse Br. (Wallace
Coffey, John Shumate, Geoff Larsen, Ron Carrico and Rob Biller).

A Cliff Swallow's nest from a previous breeding season was discovered 18 March
2004 underneath the upstream side of the same bridge (Chris O'Bryan, Wallace
Coffey ). This was the first nesting record for Johnson County. There was
evidence of a few other apparent Cliff Swallow nest-building attempts nearby
but nothing to indicate more than the one nest had been fully constructed. That
nest was believed to be from the 2003 breeding season but there is nothing to
assure that.

Let's go birding......
