I had a good day birding mostly in Humphreys County today ending up with a nice
total of 101 species. I wasn’t birding with a Big Day in mind so there were
quite a few misses, (notable misses including WILD TURKEY, both ACCIPITERs,
GREAT HORNED OWL, CHIPPING SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW). Plus at least
three target species that are present at certain locations in the county but I
didn’t get because I didn’t try.
Nothing really unexpected all day, started off the day rather late with a
MERLIN in upper Cherry Bottoms around 8:00. A BARN OWL was still in the usual
silo and I found a feeder with two PINE SISKINs close to Bakerville. At Tie
Landing a single GREATER SCAUP was the only one for the day and a RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH was a nice bonus. Inside the refuge I picked up the continuing
EURASIAN WIGEON, DUNLIN, GOLDEN EAGLE, and RED-TAILED HAWK (ABIETICOLA), and
just outside in the uplands I managed to refind the HARLAN’S about half a mile
from where it was seen on the WOW Big Day.
The original plan was to go to the Camden landfill in the afternoon but by
the time I got to Camden it was 3:00 and gulls were already flying over headed
for the river so I drove down to the river at Eva instead. Turned out to be the
right decision with an estimated 10,000 gulls moving through and roosting on
the water out from the park. Lighting was low and most of the gulls were too
distant to sift through properly but I did find both an adult and a first-cycle
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL in the mix before calling it quits.
