Hello,
If anyone is interested in trying for the Short-Eared Owl in Rutherford County,
Bill and I will make ourselves available on Saturday, February 2, to assist in
finding the bird. Last weekend, the bird made an appearance both nights around
515p. The second bird appeared after 520p on Sunday. We can meet at the
Eagleville School (parking lot near the front office). Depending on the number
of people participating, we will either carpool or you can follow us to the
location. We will plan to leave the school around 430p. If you are interested
in participating, please email me by 3p on Saturday so that we can plan
appropriately. Please let me know how many will be in your party and a contact
number to reach you. I will email you my cell phone number at that time. The
bird isn’t always cooperative enough for photos, so please keep this in mind if
this is your primary objective. Call back will NOT be used, and I am
respectfully asking visitors in advance to refrain from using it as well. We
will be birding from the road. Binoculars and a jacket will be needed.
Other birds that might be seen while there or on the way to the site include:
Sandhill Cranes, Northern Harriers, Great Horned Owl, Barn Owl, Loggerhead
Shrike and possible Merlin (least likely). Birds after dark that may be heard
could include: Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl and American Woodcock. If you
want to bird the Swamp Rd area, you will need to do that prior to meeting up
with us as we only going to the Short-Eared Owl location.
