east Tennessee Blount County Foothills Parkway At the hawk watch on the Parkway Sunday we did see a few hawks, but with practically cloudless skies we didn't have much hope of having a very eventful count. We started in the fog at lower elevation at the beginning of the Parkway off route 321 near Townsend. Very few migrants were around for most of our time there, but we did pick up SWAINSON'S THRUSH; CHESTNUT-SIDED, BAY-BREASTED & MAGNOLIA WARBLERS; SCARLET TANAGER... We drove up to the first parking area and got a couple local species...then at the first overlook on the right we saw a few TENNESSEE WARBLERS and an OVENBIRD. By about 9:30 we were at the hawk watch site (the place with parking areas on both sides of the road). Just as we arrived, a COMMON RAVEN flew over us. It took about 2 hours before Dollyann Myers spotted our first BROAD-WINGED HAWK. Most of the hawks we saw were flying far off or high overhead - we didn't even see many vultures. While waiting for raptors we did manage a few songbirds: a few E WOOD-PEWEEs; BLACK-THROATED GREEN, PINE & HOODED WARBLERS; AMERICAN REDSTART and BALTIMORE ORIOLE, along with more of some of those we had already seen, plus some local residents. Here are the raptor counts and some other species seen: Black Vulture 1 Turkey Vulture 4 Osprey 1 Broad0winged Hawk 25 Red-tailed Hawk 2 several Chimney Swifts Ruby-throated Hummingbird at least 6 Indigo Bunting 1 The following butterflies were also seen: E Tiger Swallowtail Pipevine Swallowtails - migrating? Most were flying somewhat high and in the same direction the hawks fly. Cloudless Sulphur Red-spotted Purple Monarch Gulf Fritillary (1) There were several dragonflies flying high, but none close enough to identify.
