The KTOS Jay Walk at Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery (Anderson County) this morning
didn't deliver much in the way of shorebirds, but we did get good looks at a
few strutting KILLDEERS and LEAST SANDPIPERS (the latter wins cutest bird of
the day). The highlight, in my opinion, happened in the back corner, where we
got to witness an amazing show – a bunch of CEDAR WAXWINGS and EASTERN
KINGBIRDS flycatching together! There were tons of insects, and the birds were
aggressively snatching them from the air. It was fun to watch, especially when
they sallied out from the trees, sometimes coming quite close to us, or
spiraled downward in hot pursuit of prey, or struggled to swallow a feisty
dragonfly. I'd have paid for that show, but we got it for free!
Here's my eBird checklist (which includes a few species seen after the walk
ended): http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31392226
