Twelve others joined me in the Smokies yesterday to hike the
beautiful Alum Cave Trail. Though warm at times, and a bit delayed because I
got into a fist fight with a Black Bear, this field trip to find high altitude
birds was a great success. Thirty species were seen by the group, including
Broad-winged Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Blue-headed Vireo, Black-capped Chickadee,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Gray Catbird,
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Canada Warbler, and many
more. But the coolest thing for me was getting to see the excitement on
peoples' faces when the fairyland-sounding Veerys and Winter Wrens were
singing. Truly moments of timeless quality!

Here's our checklist from the hike:

Thank you Melinda Fawver, Keith Watson, and Jimmy Tucker for
your assistance on this hike. Let's do it again soon!
