This past Friday morning (February 15) while drinking coffee in our sunroom and
watching the feeders, I saw a large, long-tailed sparrow with very obvious wing
bars or whitish tertial feather edges. I grabbed the binocs and went to the
back door which is about 20 feet from the feeder. The first thing I saw through
the binocs was a blackish head and then it turned to face me and I saw the
black top of its head and a black chin-total black face. Harris’s
sparrow-identical to Sibley’s depiction of an adult non-breeding plumage except
the bill was more light colored than pink. I retrieved my phone to get a
picture when the neighborhood boss mockingbird came in and flushed all the
birds present including this sparrow.
I delayed posting this in hopes it would return for a pic but it has not been
seen since then.
I understand this is a pretty rare sighting in E TN and I really want to get a
confirmation picture. Not sure it will happen?
