Lots of migrants coming through with the front here in west Knox County Saturday morning (18 Sept). The hounds got me up at 4AM and I spent about 20 minutes listening to over a hundred birds calling as they flew over. Mostly Swainson's Thrushes and Veerys but a good number of Gray-cheeked and 1 or 2 Wood Thrushes as well as several warbler-type calls. Early after dawn most of the birds seemed to be continuing south down Black Oak Ridge. A nice flock passed high overhead around 7:45 AM with several warblers, a Swainson's Thrush, and 2 DICKCISSELs giving their distinctive call. Added a new species to my "black gum berry eating" list: Eastern Wood-Pewee. I have seen Phoebes eating the berries but never pewees until now. A good crop this year. Things picked up in the woods around 8:30 AM but I had to leave soon for a vet appointment at 9. Still wound up with 39 species including 9 warbler species.
