This morning (22 Sept) was the largest nocturnal migration I've heard this season. Tons of Swainson's Thrushes, good numbers of Gray-cheecked, a few Veery, and at least one Wood Thrush along with scads of warbler/ sparrow calls were heard around 6AM. Just before 7AM, there were so many birds calling as they passed overhead, it was just one continuous din. Most were passing rather high up... I tried to make a quick recording but too low volume. No way to count them all either. At first you could track individual (presumedly) birds across the sky as they called multiple times, getting louder then softer as they passed over... later it was just overlapping chatter. Several still passing over in the fog after daylight. Before leaving for work, I only managed a few Tennessee and one male Hooded Warbler, a Scarlet Tanager, and a White-eyed Vireo in the yard with a few Swainson's and 1-2 Gray-cheeked Thrushes calling further back in the woods. The squirrels got all of the Black Gum fruit before it even got ripe and the Mockingbirds got all the pokeberries so not much left to bring the thrushes in close. A small group of Tennessees were working the fields around the parking lot at work as well.
