Not that I am a slave to popular culture, but I am always curious about
certain categories of Academy Award nominations (Cinematography, visual
effects, animation, and documentaries). One of the documentary nominees this
year is a film called "Winged Migration". Five teams of people followed a
variety of bird migrations through forty countries and each of the seven
continents. A variety of man-made machines were employed, including planes,
gliders, helicopters, and balloons, and other techniques were utilized to
allow the filmmakers to fly alongside, above, below and in front of their
subjects. Species that were followed include 3 species of cranes, numerous
species of seabirds, waterfowl, and wading birds, a few songbird species,
and a host of others. You can learn more about the film from the website

I have not seen it, but it sounds interesting. Who's bringing the popcorn!
