G. Rad
I've never tried it on a Phoebe nest but with my Martin houses I put a =
small
amount, about 1/2 teaspoon, of powdered sulfur in each nest area to =
prevent
and get rid of the mites. You might give that a try.

Subject: [TN-Bird] Mites strike again

Yesterday I noticed our resident Phoebe (he and his mate nest on my =
front
porch every year) popping out from under the back deck on our house a =
couple
of times. Knowing he had a nest on the front side of the house, I went =
to
see if he was still working that nest and had another going with a =
second
female. I knew the nest on the front side of the house should not be
finished. I looked up and saw beaks dangling over the edge of the nest =
and
tapped on the wall getting no response from the chicks and upon closer
examination, I saw they were dead and covered with tiny insects. I =
assume
these are mites, but I haven't collected any to look at under a =
microscope
(they were that small). I probably should have brought some to my lab =
at
school to look at. Anyway, this is two years in a row and I am =
wondering if
I can do anything to get rid of the mites so that the birds will be
successful. Anyone else experience this with a nest for Phoebes?
