[TN-Bird] Nashville Purple Martin roost is back!

After some bike racing at LP Field this evening, I swung by the location of
last years martin roost at First and Oldham Rd just north of the stadium. Much
to my surprise there there were approx. 10,000 Purple Martins coming to roost
already! A few thousand starlings were also roosting in the woods. There were
about 2,500 birds by 8:15 pm local time and 10,000 by 8:25 when I left. I
didn't stay until they all were in roost (see below). I was surprised to find
so many birds already (it's still June) as all the local martin gourds and
condo complexes in my neighborhood are still full of martins. I didn't look
real close to see if it was mostly juveniles or adults, but I did notice a lot
of adult males.

For those that may go view the martins over the next 2 months, a few notes on
parking, access, etc. The blue warehouse just across the street (on N side of
Oldham) where we parked last year has been torn down and the parking lot is
gone. I pulled up and parked next to a "no parking between 7pm and 5am" sign
in front of 2 metro police cars and neither officer said anything as I stood
there with my binoculars. There were also some interesting folks walking the
streets, so I suspect the officers were more interested in the other people
than a bird watcher! I suspect we can park safely on the street, but be aware
of your surroundings while on site and respect the police if they ask you to
leave.

Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
