Tennessee Birders,
This Saturday, 22 June 2019, the John W Sellars Chapter TOS will be joined
by members of the Nashville Chapter for a guided tour of the Native Plant &
Butterfly Garden followed by a night of goatsucker and owl hunting.
A tour of the Native Plant & Butterfly Garden at Cedars of Lebanon State
Park led by Tennessee Extension Master Gardener Linda Robertson begins at
6:30 PM. Linda established and helps maintain the garden, and will go deep
catalog sharing her knowledge of the plants and animals that call this
magnificent garden home. Everyone is invited. To participate meet at the
Dixon L. Merritt Nature Center at 6:30. The butterfly garden is in full
bloom and absolutely gorgeous so don’t miss this opportunity!
Next, we venture off into the glade in search of nightjars and owls. To
join us on the birding expedition, be at the Nature Center by 7:15 PM. We
will pile into as few vehicles as possible, in travel for miles or so to a
prime birding spot with Stephen Zipperer leading the way. Expect to hear
Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, Chuck-will’s Widow,
Eastern Whippoorwill, and Common Nighthawk. If we’re lucky, we might catch
sight of one or two of these birds.
Bring a comfortable chair, water and a snack if you wish. Mosquito
repellent might also come in handy. We will be out until 10:00 PM or so.
Note, this birding trip will require no walking, so if you have difficulty
getting around you will have no problem participating.
