Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for help. We had an awesome family trip highlighted with birds, sea mammals and turtles, and reef fish! I missed many of the rarer endemics because I did not have time to dedicate to looking for them, however, there where still plenty of amazing birds around. The coolest for me were the seabirds. I saw one life bird while whale watching from shore in Maui. I handed the binocular to my wife to look at 2 Humpback whales and she asked, "What are those white birds flying around out there?" I took the binoculars back in time to see a White-tailed Tropicbird fly through the blow from 2 Humpback whales. (The other white bird was a Red-footed Booby.) A few days later (mid-morning) at the caldera at Hawaii Volcanoes NP I was looking for my second White-tailed Tropicbird, which the ranger said are only around during late afternoon. Taking Jeff Wilson's advice to not take park rangers' information about birds too seriously, I decided to stay and scan the crater for a while. After 30-40 minutes I was about to give up when a tropicbird emerged from the middle of the smoke plume coming from the caldera! Unfortunately, no camera at the ready either time. A few photos from the trip are at the link below, though. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dkirschke/sets/72157625942845273/ David Kirschke Nashville, TN (moving to Johnson City next week) =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
